Raster to Vector conversion to CAD or GIS can be done in
either of two ways:

Inter-Active Conversion
or On-Screen Digitizing consists of importing the scanned
raster image file into a raster editing and conversion software application
like "VB-Edit" and interactively zooming, snapping, and placing or
tracing vector geometry on top of the scanned raster image. Text is also
typed over the scanned raster text. Different layers, colors, linetypes, and
fonts can be selected. The end result is a perfectly redrawn vector file
saved in a CAD or GIS format like DWG, DGN, DXF, or IGES. |

Auto-Conversion consists of importing the scanned raster
image file into an automatic raster to vector conversion program like
"VB-Convert". Recognition and conversion parameters are set
accordingly for the type of drawing and desired results and then the
software takes over the conversion process. Everything is converted to
vector including text, so what might appear as an "O" in the
resulting CAD file might actually be a circle or a couple of arcs.
Everything is also on one layer. In other words, some cleanup might be
required since the software makes a lot of assumptions. Also some drawings
that have filled areas, screenings, fine or faint linework a lot of text, or
are extremely busy might not be appropriate for this process. It is,
however, less expensive with a faster turnaround time than On-Screen
digitizing. |
